Book publishing is the industry related to the production and dissemination of all kinds of books (literary, technical, encyclopedic, entertainment, comics, news, etc.). The publishing of the book may or may not include the activity of circulating the information available to the general public, that is, distribution. In some cases, the authors may be their own publishers.

The book is defined as any single, non-periodical publication of a literary, artistic, scientific, technical, educational, informative or recreational nature, printed on any medium, whose edition is made in its entirety at once in one volume or at intervals in several volumes or fascicles. It also includes supplementary materials in any type of support, including electronic, which together with the book make up a unitary whole that cannot be marketed separately.

The book manifests itself first as an object; manufactured product, article of commerce, object of art. In its capacity as a manufactured product, it participates in the history of techniques and its supports, the writing technique, the procedures for manufacturing it must be considered. The study of the book in its trade article aspect opens up economic and sociological perspectives; It covers the domain of publishing, the preparation and dissemination of works, the factors that favor or hinder said dissemination, the organization of book trades. As an art object or a collector's item, the book may have value due to the beauty of its presentation, its illustration, its binding. All this only concerns the outward appearance of the book; but above all it is text, this is its raison d'être. For a long time it was the main means, even the only one, to disseminate and conserve ideas and knowledge, thus participating in the history of civilization and culture.

In Spanish, the term "book publishing" is traditionally confused with the publication of books and newspapers.

In Anglo-Saxon culture there is a clear difference between edition (edition) and publication (publishing). With the advent of digital computers, editing has spread to new arenas such as the world of the Internet, expanding to more modern versions of writing such as websites, blogs, and the like.

It is also called "edition" (from English edition: 'correction') to the act by which a work is modified.

A work previously disclosed in book format can be re-edited if desired. Strictly speaking, if that work is reprinted or disseminated without change, it is called a reprint; If, on the contrary, it undergoes some type of substantial modification, such as extensions, revisions, corrections, deletions, additions or any other modification, it is called a new edition or reissue, adding the appropriate number (first, second, third edition). If the differences are minimal and not substantial, they are called differences in status.

In the old edition, the same edition could have significant differences between a print run and those that followed it, which were due to warnings by the printer or the author of errors or other wishes of those involved in the edition (for example, devoting part of the edition to a character, for which a number of the copies had to be headed with a different dedication) during the same printing process of the work.

The art of preparing someone else's work for publication, from alternative versions or manuscripts that do not completely coincide, is called ecdotics. It is considered part of philology and within it the field of textual criticism.
